Assessment of a Biogas Refinery

Anaerobic digestion of nitrogen-rich substrates might be hindered when ammonia (NH3) formation reaches toxic levels for ethanogenic microorganisms. One possible strategy to avoid inhibiting conditions is the removal of NH3 from the digestate by stripping and scrubbing technology and by recirculating N2-depleted digestate back to the digester. This review studies a biogas refinery, which generates biogas from farm waste and recycles digestate after removal of NH3 to produce ammonium sulfate and liming substrate.
The cost of biogas generated by this process is estimated and its economics are evaluated. The net price of methane (CH4) generated is estimated to be about 1,564 cents per thousand standard cubic feet (ยข/Mscf). The refinery is assumed to be on a farm, which has the raw materials to be supplied to the refinery.
