Long term bonds outperform
August saw long term bonds across EUR, GBP and USD gain strong returns, making them the best performing sector in fixed income YTD. Our fixed income monthly monitor also highlighted:.
- Markit iBoxx " Gilts 15+, $ Treasuries 15+, € German bunds 15+ returned 6.41%, 4.24%, 5.72%, respectively, in August.
- Five year forward breakeven inflation in Europe drops below 2%, causing ECB to cuts rates and announce ABS purchases
- Yield curves in EUR and GBP shift down after low inflation figures.
- US Treasury ETFs experience strong inflows, $ 4.68 bn., on the back of strong performance.
