This report is concerned with the technology and costs of various synthetic processes for the manufacture of glacial acetic acid. It does not cover the natural processes such as alcohol fermentation and destructive distillation of hard wood.
Five synthetic acetic acid processes are evaluated in detail in this report. They are the oxidation of acetaldehyde, oxidation of naphtha, oxidation of n-butane, two-step (esterification and oxicracking) process from n-butene, and carbonylation of methanol with carbon monoxide. All of these processes are currently in commercial operation, except the two-step process from n-butene, and commercialization of that process has been announced. A review of other acetic acid processes described in the patent literature is also presented, together with the processes for separation and recovery of acetic acid from aqueous solutions.
