This interim report is an extension of Process Economics Program Report 76, "Aromatic Amines" issued in April 1972. The subject of the current report is the manufacture of m-phenylenediamine, one of the commercial aromatic amines. Conventionally, m-phenylenediamine is made from dinitrobenzene, which is usually produced captively. A new process in development produces m-phenylenediamine by direct amination. The three main sections of this report (Sections 3, 4, and 5), therefore, are about dinitrobenzene, m-phenylenediamine from dinitrobenzene, and m-phenylenediamine by direct amination respectively. Other processes are briefly reviewed in Section 6. Section 2 is a summary, a comparison of the processes, and a description of the industry status of the subject product. Supplemental information, including data useful for de- sign, is presented in appendices.
