The third in a series of reports that address pesticides for which basic patent protection will soon expire, this report presents the technology and economics for the manufacture of two pesticides, benomyl and phenmedipham, and their intermediates. (Previous reports covered alachlor, butachlor, trifluralin, carbofuran, and mancozeb/maneb.)

Commercially, benomyl is made from o-phenylenediamine, methyl chloroformate, cyanamide, and n-butyl isocyanate. n-Butyl isocyanate is made from n-butyl amine. Phenmedipham is made from oraminophenol, methyl chloroformate, and m-tolyl isocyanate. m-Tolyl isocyanate is made from m-toluidine. The report evaluates the manufacture of all these intermediates; it also includes the important properties of the products and the physical property data for the intermediates used in the design of the processes.

Reports prepared in the PEP'85 phase include economics based on an improved cost estimation method. Because this is the first report in that phase, it contains a short discussion of the new procedure.
