Published March 1973

This supplemental report revises and updates certain aspects of the original styrene report issued in October 1967 and discusses in detail the developments that have occurred in the styrene industry in the last five years.

We have revised on original evaluation of the aluminum chloride and boron trifluoride processes for producing ethylbenzene by alkylation of benzene. Other new processes for ethylbenzene are briefly discussed. Recent improvements have been made in the conventional dehydrogenation process to increase conversion and improve operation. This high-conversion process is evaluated and several possible process variations are compared.

Two newly developed processes--oxidative dehydrogenation using sulfur dioxide, and extraction from pyrolysis gasoline--are also evaluated in detail, A revised evaluation has been made of the Oxirane process, which coproduces styrene and propylene oxide using an ethylbenzene hydroperoxide intermediate. The pollution problems associated with conventional styrene production are analyzed in detail and the economics of alternative treatment methods are examined.
