The theme of this report is caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and soda ash (sodium carbonate). Caustic soda is now made only by electrolysis of sodium chloride solutions. This technology is systematically and thoroughly reviewed in Section 4 of this report. Three electrolytic processes-diaphragm, mercury, and membrane--are evaluated and compared in Section 5. For soda ash, the conventional Solvay pro- cess (Section 6) and modificationa of it (Section 7) are evaluated.
Processes for recovery of soda ash from natural trona (a conventional monohydrate process and a solution mining process) are evaluated (Section 8). The cauatization of sodium carbonate solution from trona is evaluated (Section 9). Finally, other possible ways of producing caustic soda and soda ash are discussed (Section 10). In the evaluation of salt solution electrolysis, the coats refer to caustic soda, of chlorine in the editions of 61.
