Published May 1967

This study covers the separation of the xylene isomers into relatively pure components, starting with a C8 aromatic fraction. The study also covers the recovery of ethylbenzene. The manufacture of xylene by synthetic methods, by dealkylation, or by other processes is not within the scope of the report.

Because p-xylene is the isomer that is currently of greatest interest, the isomerization of the other C8 aromatics is often practiced commercially. It is impossible to avoid the inclusion of isomerization processes in any meaningful study of xylene separation processes because of the unusually high degree of coupling that exists between the various process steps in such plants.
