Since the supplemental report on xylenes separation was issued in July 1970, several plants have been built that use molecular sieves to adsorb p-xylenes selectively. These processes appear to be most attractive economically when combined with isomerization. This report reviews these adsorption and isomerization processes and evaluates those that have been commercialized by UOP (Parex and Isomar) and Toray (Aromax and Isolene).

A combination of adsorption and crystallization proposed by Idemitsu is discussed qualitatively.
