This report will review recent technical developments of nonconventional ethylene processes and present the economics of those with possible commercial potential. Processes that may be evaluated include: thermal cracking using adiabatic and fluidized-bed cracking reactors, catalytic pyrolysis, and ethane dehydrogenation. Ethane chlorination/dehydrochlorination can coproduce ethylene with vinyl chloride. Ethane oxydehydrogenation removes the equilibrium limitation in ethylene production by ethane dehydrogenation. In the presence of a catalyst, methanol can be converted to dimethy ether, which is then decomposed to ethylene and water.
