Published December 2023

Industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaners are defined as those cleaners intended for routine cleaning of industrial, commercial and public institutions, outside of the normal household environment. I&I cleaners are used in numerous applications by various customer types, and employ a variety of chemicals including acids, alcohols, bleaches, disinfectants, solvents and surfactants. Segmentation and analysis of the market can therefore vary; however, this report focuses on segmentation by end-use application.

The I&I cleaning market has rebounded in 2022–23 after the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, most cleaning product segments declined as a consequence of national lockdowns that affected hospitality, restaurants and nonessential retail sectors; in contrast, consumption increased for the cleaning products used in healthcare facilities, hospitals and those institutions that remained opened. The pandemic’s effects could also be seen into 2021, and in some business sectors in 2022. In 2023, the I&I cleaners industry entered a post-pandemic recovery stage, showing recovery for most sectors of cleaning products except sanitizers and disinfectants. Once the domain primarily of the healthcare sector, the use of hand sanitizers became commonplace in public buildings during the pandemic, leading to a surge in demand in 2020. As the pandemic has faded, consumption of sanitizers and disinfectants declined sharply in 2022–23.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of I&I cleaners by region.

North America, mainland China and Western Europe accounted for over two-thirds of consumption value in 2023. Public perception over hygiene and cleanliness has changed in the past couple of years, and institutions are predicted to show increasing attention to cleaning practices in the forecast period.

FAQ

What is industrial and institutional cleaning ?

Industrial and institutional cleaning is defined as cleaning operations that are performed outside of the normal home cleaning. Institutional cleaning includes the professional cleaning of offices, public buildings, commercial premises, the hospitality sector, hospital & healthcare sector, transportation, agricultural cleaning, food and beverage processing and commercial laundries. Industrial cleaning includes the cleaning of process equipment and the cleaning, preparation and finishing of surfaces such as metals and plastics for industrial and consumer goods.

What are the various market segments for industrial and institutional cleaning ?

There are different ways of defining the industrial and institutional cleaning sector, either by product, application or end-use market. One common segmentation of the market is by Janitorial Cleaning; Kitchen and Catering; Agriculture, food and beverage processing; Transportation; Commercial Laundry; Industrial Cleaning. Hand sanitizers, which have played a major role in the fight against COVID-19, have now become common-place in offices, retail stores, public buildings and institutions. Hand-sanitizers have shown tremendous growth in global consumption throughout the pandemic and beyond as health and hygiene concerns persist. Whilst not specifically defined as the cleaning of material surfaces, hand sanitizers are often included in the market for institutional cleaning.

What are the types of cleaning chemicals used?

There are a multitude of cleaning chemicals used to prepare cleaning products. Cleaning products are often a formulation of numerous cleaning chemicals that are designed to perform a particular task. The most common chemicals used are surfactants, alcohols, acids, bleaches, disinfectants and solvents.

Is a surfactant the same as a detergent ?

Surfactants are a group of chemicals that possess both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties. As such, they can lower the interfacial tension between two liquids. Surfactants are therefore most commonly used for their detergent properties in that they can retain oils and greases in cleaning operations. Surfactants can also be used for their emulsification, foaming and softening properties in products such as cosmetics, personal care products, textile and hair softeners. The term detergent is more commonly used when referring to dishwashing and in particular, laundry cleaning products, which contain a combination of surfactants and other functional chemicals carefully formulated for their specific applications.

What are the major challenges of the cleaning industry?

The cleaning sector is an important contributor to the global economy both in terms the chemicals that are used and the thousands of companies that are involved. Demand for cleaning chemicals is expected to show continued growth, especially in developing economies in line with increased prosperity, hygiene and health concerns. Formulating cost effective cleaning products in this highly competitive market, that meet the demands of an increasingly discerning consumer base, increased legislation on the types of chemicals used and growing momentum on sustainability and carbon neutrality, will present both challenges and opportunities for the cleaning sector.
